Is Avocado Oil Worth It? Here’s What You’re Really Paying For

If you’ve ever stood in the cooking oil aisle comparing prices, you’ve probably wondered: Is avocado oil actually worth it Vs a Vegetable oil?

It’s a fair question. Avocado oil is usually more expensive than vegetable, canola, or other common cooking oils, and sometimes even more expensive than olive oil.

The short answer? For many kitchens, yes. But whether avocado oil is worth the price depends on what you’re buying, how it was made, and more important is how you plan to use it.

Here’s what makes avocado oil different.

First, Avocado Oil Comes From a Fruit

One of the biggest differences between avocado oil and many everyday cooking oils is where the oil comes from. Avocado oil is extracted primarily from the flesh, or pulp, of the avocado rather than from a seed. That fleshy part of the fruit naturally contains oil, which can be separated and processed into cooking oil.

And it takes a lot of fruit.

At HASSY, approximately 15–22 Hass avocados can go into producing the oil for a 500 ml bottle, depending on the fruit and its oil content.

That alone helps explain why a bottle of real avocado oil doesn't have the same economics as inexpensive commodity cooking oils. That is why checking on the back of the label is important.

So, Why Is Avocado Oil More Expensive?

Producing avocado oil starts with growing and harvesting avocados, followed by processing the fruit and extracting the oil. Quality, origin, fruit availability, processing methods, packaging, and transportation can all influence the final cost.

This is also why not every bottle labeled avocado oil is necessarily comparable.

When shopping, look beyond price. Consider where the oil comes from, whether the brand provides information about sourcing and processing, and whether you're buying pure avocado oil rather than choosing solely based on the cheapest bottle on the shelf.

The Big Advantage: It's Extremely Versatile

This is where avocado oil can really earn its place in the kitchen.

Refined avocado oil is especially useful for high-temperature cooking. It has a neutral flavor and a high smoke point, making it a versatile option for:

  • Sautéing

  • Roasting

  • Grilling

  • Frying

  • Baking

  • Everyday stovetop cooking

HASSY High Heat, for example, has a smoke point of approximately 500°F (271°C). Instead of keeping several neutral cooking oils around for different applications, one good avocado oil can handle a lot of everyday cooking.

What About Extra Virgin Avocado Oil?

This is where things get interesting. Extra virgin and refined avocado oil have different jobs in the kitchen.

Refined avocado oil is your workhorse. It's neutral and designed to perform well when things get hot.

Extra virgin avocado oil is all about flavor. Cold-pressed avocado oil can have fresh, grassy, buttery, or nutty notes depending on the fruit and production process.

Think of it as a finishing ingredient for: salads, dips, dressings, bread, vegetables, soups, bowls, or simply drizzling over a finished dish.

At HASSY, we like to think of them as one for the heat, one for the drip.

Is Avocado Oil Healthy?

Avocado oil is naturally rich in monounsaturated fats, particularly oleic acid the same type of fat commonly associated with olive oil.

Replacing foods higher in saturated fats with foods containing unsaturated fats can be part of a heart-healthy eating pattern.

But avocado oil isn't magic. It's still an oil and a calorie-dense food. What makes it attractive is the combination of its fat profile, cooking performance, and versatility.

There's Another Benefit: Imperfect Avocados Can Still Have a Purpose

Not every avocado grown on a farm is going to become the perfect avocado you see at the grocery store. Some are too small. Some are too large. Some ripen differently. Others simply don't meet the cosmetic standards required for the fresh produce aisle.

But an imperfect-looking avocado can still contain perfectly useful oil.

At HASSY, we use avocados that may not be destined for the fresh produce shelf and give that fruit another purpose by turning it into avocado oil.

For us, that's an important part of the equation: good fruit doesn't have to look perfect to be valuable.

But Is Every Avocado Oil Worth It?

Not necessarily.

A high price by itself doesn't guarantee quality.

If you're going to spend more on avocado oil, it's worth asking a few questions:

Is it 100% avocado oil?
Look for products without other oils blended into them.

Where do the avocados come from?
Transparency around origin is a good thing.

Does the brand explain how the oil is made?
"Refined" and "extra virgin" are different products intended for different uses.

How is it packaged?
Oil is sensitive to light, heat, and oxygen, so packaging and storage matter.

Does it taste and smell right?
Extra virgin avocado oil should have noticeable character, while refined avocado oil should generally be clean and neutral.

Why HASSY Does Avocado Oil Differently

For us, avocado oil isn't a trendy ingredient. Avocados are our family business.

HASSY comes from three generations of Hass avocado growers in Michoacán, Mexico. Our family has been growing avocados since the late 1980s, and we created HASSY to bring that experience closer to the people actually cooking with the oil.

Our avocado oil is made from 100% Hass avocados from Mexico, with no blends and no seed oils.

We focus on single-origin sourcing, use imperfect avocados that can still make beautiful oil, and package our oil in dark glass bottles to help protect it from light.

Because if you're going to pay more for avocado oil, we think you should know what's actually inside your bottle and where it came from.

So, Is Avocado Oil Worth It?

If you're looking for the cheapest possible cooking oil, avocado oil probably isn't going to win.

But if you want an oil that can handle high-heat cooking, has a neutral everyday option as well as a flavorful extra virgin version, is naturally rich in monounsaturated fats, and can be produced from fruit that might otherwise never make it to the produce aisle, a good avocado oil can absolutely be worth keeping in your kitchen.

The key word is good.

Know where it comes from. Know what's inside the bottle. And choose an oil that makes sense for how you actually cook.

At HASSY, we believe better cooking starts with better ingredients.
